Van Buren, MO - Day 29

So nice to ride 58 miles to lunch and then not have to get back on the bike and ride another 50! Beautiful but crisp day today, almost no wind, hills were less intense, fall colors beginning to change in the hillsides. Had a local encounter with three pit bulls and a man with about as many teeth that didn't want me taking a picture of their 'camp' but no dog or human bites incurred. Staying on the banks of the Current River in Van Buren, MO which was established in 1833 and named after Martin Van Buren.  The river is beautiful and clear - the banks are pretty scrubbed from a flood two years ago that raised the water to the level of the second floor of the hotel (see pic below). The first bridge was built over the river in 1893 with a 5 cent toll (15 cents for horse teams). Big Spring is located just south of us on the river and is the second largest tributary. It pours out 13,000 liters of water a SECOND. Each day, the spring dissolves 175 tons of underground limestone a day - enough over a year if concentrated in one area to make a cave a mile long, 30 feet high, and 50 feet wide!

Lots of sawmills and logging operations today

'Cat' cemetery

Totally not worth it picture of bus/home

Flood waters went up to the second floor

One of the gang enjoying the afternoon on the river not a road
