Stillwater, OK - Day 23

T-38 jet trainer at Vance AFB
The terrain became greener and much more rolling today - you'd crest one hill and see several more out across the horizon which was pretty, but also somewhat painful. Cool again but sunny with NW winds that blew across our shoulder most of the day - should get a little warmer and less windy tomorrow. Tomorrow will be more of the same terrain into Tulsa where we'll have a rest day - today was a relatively easy 71 miles. Watched fighter jets at Vance AFB taking off and practicing maneuvers and touch-and-gos for a little while and rode through some neat little towns such as Perry, which seems to be surviving - unlike most small towns on the trip which seem to be on the verge of becoming modern ghost towns.

We went from the 9th largest to the 10th largest city in OK - Stillwater is home to Oklahoma State University (for the record, the Cowboys last beat the OU Sooners in football in 2014) which is the major employer. Stillwater is apparently derived from the local native name for the area. It was the site of one of the first land rushes to settle the territory on April 22, 1889 - a cannon was fired and people ran to 'stake their claim' - by nightfall over 240 parcels had been claimed and the town had its start. It's the home to 'red dirt' music - a blend of rock, folk, and country - Garth Brooks came to fame from here. We passed the Tumbleweed Bar today which hosts a 'calf fry' (everything including the testicles apparently) and concert that has become a three-day, 30,000 person event. Also, glad it's not tornado season as Stillwater is one of the largest towns in 'Tornado Alley'.

Winter wheat just coming up (I think)
