Pagosa Springs, CO - Day 15

I love this area of the country! Beautiful 61 miles up and down through valleys and passes - some fall color but not as much as above Durango - it's drier here and more pine and scrub. Pagosa Springs is apparently a translation of the Ute Indians 'Pah-gosah' meaning 'water that smells'. The 'Mother Spring' that supplies the resort and the other thermals in the area is 144 degrees and comes from over 1000 feet down in the earth. They have a variety of pools of varying temperatures - I was fine in the 'waterfall' at 108 but not the 'lobster pot' at 111 - with some cool-offs in the river added. Pagosa has about 300 sunny days a year and is surrounded by wilderness, so it's becoming a hugely popular place for second homes (60% of the properties in the area are seasonal). And great trout fishing! Wolf Creek ski area is close by which gets enormous amounts of dry powder each winter, but the base is at 10,300 feet so you have to be ready for a workout!

Always good to see the van!

Flat tire fixing party - only one flat here but in a drafting group so they all stopped
